Centenary Celebrations

In the year 2015 it was 100 years since the death of Martina Bergman Österberg. The Bergman Österberg Union (BÖU) felt it would be appropriate on this occasion to celebrate her life and the contribution she made to women's education and advancement, with Physical Education being her focus. Our celebrations took place during the weekend Saturday, 5th September and Sunday, 6th September, 2015.

The weekend began with a day conference entitled The Legacy of Martina Bergman Österberg, which was sponsored by University of Greenwich and held at North Kent College, Oakfield Lane, Dartford, on Saturday, 5th September.

The conference was filmed and a full record of the speeches is available at this link:

We are delighted that the Conference attracted National and International interest, and the speakers who agreed to take part are:

Professor Jennifer Hargreaves (An early pioneer of sport sociology, specialising in gender issues; published prolifically; guest speaker worldwide; guest Professor in Germany, Hong Kong and Japan)

Professor Sakuko Ishizaki (Principal, Japan Women's College of P.E.)

Dr. Birgitta Wistrand (Swedish Academic, Author, Feminist and Politician)

Mr. Peter Boreham (Vice-President of the Bergman Österberg Union)

Mrs. Joan Mills (Honorary Life Member, England Netball)

On Saturday evening, 5th September, there was a wonderful Celebration Dinner, which took place at the Daniel Defoe Hall, University of Greenwich. The guest speaker was: Miss Gill Aitkenhead, MBE, DL Her Majesty the Queen's Vice Lord Lieutenant of the County of Dunbartonshire.
